Instagrammers Anonymous: Princes Street Gardens and Charlotte Square

Normally Instagrammers Anonymous is a summary of the week that has just been as seen through my addiction to Instagram; however, it would have been VERY dull this week. Aside from a trip to the rugby at Murrayfield last weekend (obviously that doesn’t come under the dull category) I’ve done very little except work and look at flats.

My moving plans appear to be being thwarted once again – think mouldy bathrooms which are going to get “sorted, they’re painting it this week” (I kid you not), rooms the size of shoeboxes and rents larger than Greece’s national debt – but to counter act this dullness I thought we’d have a couple of photos I’ve taken during lunchtime wanders this week.

The first is of the Royal Scots Greys monument – better known to most of us as the guy on a horse at the top of Princes Street Gardens. It’s appeared several times on the blog before, in a post about Princes Street Gardens, to name but one, but most of us know very little about it. One of the UK’s longest serving regiments – in fact Scotland and the UK’s, as it pre-dates the Acts of Union – the Royal Scots Greys were part of its respective national armies for 293 years from 1678 to 1971. The statue itself dates back to 1906 and was to commemorate the fallen of the Boer war. More about the statue can be found here.Royal Scots Greys Monument, Princes Street Garden, Edinburgh

On the theme of ‘seen that here before’, the other photo is of one of my favourite buildings in Edinburgh – West Register House. Set in west side of Charlotte Square this one-time church is now part of the Nation Archives; but the building still retains much of its grandeur and pressence. From its site it looks across the square and has an uninterrupted view down George Street to the RBS building at the other end in St Andrews Square. I love this building for its green dome and golden top; standing taller than anything else around it, it looks especially good on crisp autumnal walks.Charlotte Square and West Register House, Edinburgh

Day 31: ‘A Post Work Drink’

The problem with ‘a post work drink’ on a Friday evening that it is rarely that, somehow, it always morphs into the multiple. And that is something I should be fully aware of by now; but somehow I still managed to miss the memo and stupidly arranged to meet someone in town on Saturday morning.

Because of this today’s post is going to very short as I got home rather late and I’m about to leave again to go to the farmers’ market. Sleep? Who needs it…

Blame it on the sunshine? Blame it on the moonlight? No – blame it on the Brewdog (and it just being so damn good!).Brewdog, Brewgod Edinburgh, Beer, Friday Night

Day 25: Easy Like a Sunday Morning

Yes, it’s Sunday morning, a time reserved in my week for doing as little as humanly possible. Except for today, because it seems that there is lots to do. It’s mothers’ day (the eternal debate about the placement of the apostrophe – but surly the day belongs to all mothers, not one and thus I will put it at the end) and my brothers and I are cooking dinner. Obviously I can’t say what we’re having in case she reads it pre-dinner time, but hopefully my Masterchef inspired (ahem…) dessert will work out alright and might even be the subject of tomorrow’s post. We’ve (read I’ve) also got her a really witty card – none of this soppy pink nonsense – it even looks like it’s got magnetic letters (you know, the sort you had on your fridge when you were little?) on it and everything. Here’s hoping she likes it…

As I spent all day watching the rugby today’s photo is another slight cheat (it was taken on Friday) and, once again, features West Register House and Charlotte Square. It was originally meant for yesterday, but I got distracted by a shiny object and the rugby ball.Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, West Register House, cobbles

Day 15: West Register House and a Casual Bit of Editing

As I got off the bus this (well, yesterday now) morning I noticed the sun glittering off the dome of West Register House. And so – in a fit of uncharacteristic promptness – I got today’s photo. West Register House has appeared on this blog quite a few times in the past, so you’re probably all a bit bored of it by now, but I pass through Charlotte Square (at the West End, where WRH is situated) quite a lot – multiple times every day now, actually – and the building’s character and imposing nature makes it one of my favourite buildings in the New Town. Given the slightly grey nature of the morning I’ve edited it a little bit, and as for the dodgy angle, well that’s just obligatory. West Register House, Edinburgh, buildings, photoshop, editing,
